Students investigate the particle model of matter in relation to the physical properties of solids, liquids, and gases.

What Did Students Do?

This week in our Grade 5 classroom, students have been combining their science and literacy learning by researching matter and the three states of matter. Students began by reading an informational book on Epic about solids, liquids, and gases. While reading, they practiced identifying important information and recording key facts using organized notes, focusing on vocabulary and properties rather than full sentences.

After gathering their information, students worked collaboratively in groups to apply their learning by creating a slideshow presentation. Each group used their notes to explain the differences between solids, liquids, and gases, including their properties and real-life examples. This activity encouraged students to communicate scientific ideas clearly, work together respectfully, and transform information from a text into their own words. Through this process, students strengthened their understanding of matter while building research, note-taking, and presentation skills.

Below are some of the presentation slides that they have been working on so far.

On Thursday, September 18, our Grade 5 students participated in AMA Patrol training. This training was an important opportunity for students to learn about the role of the AMA School Safety Patrol team and what it means to be a leader in our school community. During the session, students explored the responsibilities of being a patrol member, including keeping others safe, modeling positive behavior, and communicating clearly with others. They also learned about the key qualities needed to be an effective patrol, such as responsibility, teamwork, respect, and confidence. Students also had the chance to practice the commands and procedures that patrol members use every day. This hands-on expe...
September 2-5 Learning Outcomes Wellness Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being. Students acknowledge and connect perspectives of self and others through communication and listening skills. What Did  Students Do? Welcome back students and families! We have had a great start to the school year. We have welcomed a new family to our Grade 5 class this year. Warmest welcome to the new families here at Andrew Sibbald School. This week, we delved into our anchor text for the year "I am We". We read the book and used it as a starting point for many learning activities and discussions. Students discussed the concept of community and we used this to begin talking about our classroom and lunchroom expectations and norms.  Students also shared about the various communities they are part of and discussed how they feel when in these groupings. This discussion also inspired the hand dot artwork that students have begun. Each row of d...
October 29-31 Learning Outcomes Literacy  Students examine how the form and structure of texts can support the communication of ideas and information. What Did  Students Do? This week, our class had a monstrously fun time exploring persuasive writing through a creative project called Be My Monster Friend! Each student designed their very own friendly monster and then wrote a persuasive paragraph inviting the reader to become that monster’s friend. Through this activity, students examined how the form and structure of a persuasive text help writers clearly communicate their ideas and influence their audience. They learned how to state an opinion, provide convincing reasons, and use descriptive details to support their message, all while organizing their writing in a logical and engaging way.
