What Did Students Do?

This week, our Grade 5 class had the exciting opportunity to visit the The Hangar Flight Museum. This field trip connected perfectly to our learning about flight and gave students a chance to see real aircraft up close.

During our visit, students explored the museum and observed a variety of planes, learning about their design, history, and how they are able to fly. It was a valuable experience to connect our classroom learning about aerodynamics and the forces of flight to real-world examples.

One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity for students to build their own glider planes. Students applied what they have been learning in class to create and test their designs, thinking carefully about how to make their gliders fly effectively.

The volunteers at the museum were incredibly knowledgeable and made the experience even more meaningful by sharing their expertise and answering student questions. It was amazing to see students engaged, curious, and excited about learning in a hands-on environment. This was a memorable experience that truly brought our flight unit to life!

Students discussed the concept of community and we used this to begin talking about our classroom and lunchroom expectations and norms.  Students also shared about the various communities they are part of and discussed how they feel when in these groupings. This discussion also inspired the hand dot artwork that students have begun. Each row of d...

This week, our class had a monstrously fun time exploring persuasive writing through a creative project called Be My Monster Friend! Each student designed their very own friendly monster and then wrote a persuasive paragraph inviting the reader to become that monster’s friend. Through this activity, students examined how the form and structure of a persuasive text help writers clearly communicate their ideas and influence their audience. They learned how to state an opinion, provide convincing reasons, and use descriptive details to support their message, all while organizing their writing in a logical and engaging way.
