What Did Students Do?
Over the past week, our Grade 5 classroom has been exploring the exciting topic of flight. We began by building and testing paper airplanes based on our initial ideas and prior knowledge. Students experimented with different designs and had the opportunity to see what worked well and what could be improved.
As the week progressed, students deepened their understanding by learning about the four forces of flight (lift, gravity, thrust, and drag) as well as the basics of aerodynamics. Through discussions and reading informational texts on Epic, students learned how these forces work together to help objects fly and how design can impact performance.
Using this new knowledge, students were then challenged to redesign and build a new paper airplane. They applied what they learned about aerodynamics and the forces of flight to improve their designs. We are looking forward to testing these new planes and seeing how students have used their learning to make thoughtful improvements. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills take flight!
