Social Studies

Students examine government and social systems in ancient civilizations and empires.

What Did Students Do?

This week in our Grade 5 classroom, students were introduced to an exciting new area of learning by exploring how governments make decisions. As part of this introduction, students worked in groups to create their own “governments” and were given the task of developing one classroom rule that would be fair for everyone.
Students spent time discussing ideas, thinking carefully about fairness, and considering how their rule would impact others. Each group then created a poster to clearly present their rule, explain why it is fair, and share how it would benefit our classroom community.
After completing their posters, students presented their ideas to the class, practicing their speaking and listening skills while explaining their thinking. Once all groups had presented, we held a class vote to decide which rule would be implemented in our classroom. This process helped students experience how decisions are made in a democratic system and the importance of considering different perspectives.
This activity served as a strong introduction to our upcoming learning outcome, as students began to understand how rules, fairness, and decision-making play an important role in building a positive and respectful community.

This week, our class had a monstrously fun time exploring persuasive writing through a creative project called Be My Monster Friend! Each student designed their very own friendly monster and then wrote a persuasive paragraph inviting the reader to become that monster’s friend. They learned how to state an opinion, provide convincing reasons, and use descriptive details to support their message, all while organizing their writing in a logical and engaging way. We have had a great start to the school year. We have welcomed a new family to our Grade 5 class this year. Warmest welcome to the new families here at Andrew Sibbald School. This week, we delved into our anchor text for the year "I am We". We read the book and used it as a starting point for many learning activities and discussions. Students discussed the concept of community and we used this to begin talking about our classroom and lunchroom expectations and norms.  Students also shared about the various communities they are part of and discussed how they feel when in these groupings. This discussion also inspired the hand dot artwork that students have begun. Each row of d...
