Science

Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes.

What Did Students Do?

This week, our classroom was buzzing with excitement as students participated in a hands-on science experience with Teacher’s Pet!

Through a variety of interactive stations, students explored how different biological systems work together to support life in humans, animals, and plants. The program encouraged students to think like scientists as they investigated important body systems, examined detailed models, participated in movement-based activities, and made connections between the structures and functions of living organisms.

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to rotate through several engaging learning stations. Students explored the digestive, musculoskeletal, circulatory, and respiratory systems through collaborative games and hands-on investigations. They also learned about transport systems in plants and how water and nutrients move throughout a plant to help it grow and survive.

Perhaps the most memorable experience was the virtual reality station, where students had the opportunity to take a tour inside the human body. Through immersive VR technology, they were able to observe organs and biological processes up close, bringing their classroom learning to life in a whole new way.

Throughout the day, students demonstrated curiosity, teamwork, and enthusiasm as they participated in each activity. The experience provided a wonderful opportunity to deepen their understanding of how biological systems are interconnected and how they work together to keep organisms healthy and functioning.

On Thursday, September 18, our Grade 5 students participated in AMA Patrol training. This training was an important opportunity for students to learn about the role of the AMA School Safety Patrol team and what it means to be a leader in our school community. During the session, students explored the responsibilities of being a patrol member, including keeping others safe, modeling positive behavior, and communicating clearly with others. They also learned about the key qualities needed to be an effective patrol, such as responsibility, teamwork, respect, and confidence. Students also had the chance to practice the commands and procedures that patrol members use every day. This hands-on expe...
September 2-5 Learning Outcomes Wellness Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being. Students acknowledge and connect perspectives of self and others through communication and listening skills. What Did  Students Do? Welcome back students and families! We have had a great start to the school year. We have welcomed a new family to our Grade 5 class this year. Warmest welcome to the new families here at Andrew Sibbald School. This week, we delved into our anchor text for the year "I am We". We read the book and used it as a starting point for many learning activities and discussions. Students discussed the concept of community and we used this to begin talking about our classroom and lunchroom expectations and norms.  Students also shared about the various communities they are part of and discussed how they feel when in these groupings. This discussion also inspired the hand dot artwork that students have begun. Each row of d...
October 29-31 Learning Outcomes Literacy  Students examine how the form and structure of texts can support the communication of ideas and information. What Did  Students Do? This week, our class had a monstrously fun time exploring persuasive writing through a creative project called Be My Monster Friend! Each student designed their very own friendly monster and then wrote a persuasive paragraph inviting the reader to become that monster’s friend. Through this activity, students examined how the form and structure of a persuasive text help writers clearly communicate their ideas and influence their audience. They learned how to state an opinion, provide convincing reasons, and use descriptive details to support their message, all while organizing their writing in a logical and engaging way.
