Learning Outcomes

English Language Arts and Literature

Students construct meaning from a variety of texts by making connections, identifying important ideas, and demonstrating understanding.
Students create and communicate responses to texts in a variety of ways for different purposes and audiences.

What Did Students Do?

This week, our Grade 5 students celebrated the completion of their guided reading books by demonstrating their understanding in creative and meaningful ways. Rather than completing the same assignment, students were given the opportunity to choose from nine different project options to show their learning and comprehension of their novel.

The choice board allowed students to select a task that best matched their interests and strengths while still demonstrating their understanding of important elements from their book. As students worked on their projects, they reflected on key events, characters, themes, and lessons from their reading. It was wonderful to see the variety of ideas, creativity, and thoughtful responses that emerged from the different project choices.

Providing students with choice encouraged engagement, independence, and ownership of their learning. I am so proud of the effort students put into both reading their books and creating projects that showcased their understanding in unique ways.

This week, our class had a monstrously fun time exploring persuasive writing through a creative project called Be My Monster Friend! Through this activity, students examined how the form and structure of a persuasive text help writers clearly communicate their ideas and influence their audience. They learned how to state an opinion, provide convincing reasons, and use descriptive details to support their message, all while organizing their writing in a logical and engaging way. We have had a great start to the school year. We have welcomed a new family to our Grade 5 class this year. Warmest welcome to the new families here at Andrew Sibbald School. This week, we delved into our anchor text for the year "I am We". We read the book and used it as a starting point for many learning activities and discussions. Students discussed the concept of community and we used this to begin talking about our classroom and lunchroom expectations and norms.  Students also shared about the various communities they are part of and discussed how they feel when in these groupings. This discussion also inspired the hand dot artwork that students have begun. Each row of d...
