English Language Arts and Literature 

Students investigate how oral language can be designed to communicate ideas and information.


What Did Students Do?

This week, our students had the exciting opportunity to participate in a performance-based learning experience with Trickster Theatre. 

Our class focused on the theme of the Yukon. Through movement, acting, and collaboration, students helped bring ideas about the Yukon to life.

Throughout the experience, students practiced using oral language to communicate ideas clearly with one another. They worked together to share ideas, listen carefully, and contribute to the development of the story. Activities like this help students investigate how oral language can be designed to communicate ideas and information, as they express their thinking through discussion, storytelling, and performance.

It has been wonderful to see students step outside their comfort zones, work collaboratively, and use their voices and creativity to explore learning in an engaging way.

      September 2-5 Learning Outcomes Wellness Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being. Students acknowledge and connect perspectives of self and others through communication and listening skills. What Did  Students Do? Welcome back students and families! We have had a great start to the school year. We have welcomed a new family to our Grade 5 class this year. Warmest welcome to the new families here at Andrew Sibbald School. This week, we delved into our anchor text for the year "I am We". We read the book and used it as a starting point for many learning activities and discussions. Students discussed the concept of community and we used this to begin talking about our classroom and lunchroom expectations and norms.  Students also shared about the various communities they are part of and discussed how they feel when in these groupings. October 29-31 Learning Outcomes Literacy  Students examine how the form and structure of texts can support the communication of ideas and information. What Did  Students Do? This week, our class had a monstrously fun time exploring persuasive writing through a creative project called Be My Monster Friend! Each student designed their very own friendly monster and then wrote a persuasive paragraph inviting the reader to become that monster’s friend. Through this activity, students examined how the form and structure of a persuasive text help writers clearly communicate their ideas and influence their audience. They learned how to state an opinion, provide convincing reasons, and use descriptive details to support their message, all while organizing their writing in a logical and engaging way.
